Apparently, the LAPD takes the seat belt enforcement procedures really, really seriously. According to TMZ, Compton rapper YG was cruising around Hollywood early this morning in a Maybach sports car with some friends when they were pulled over by the police. YG wasn’t driving, but was detained and handcuffed by the authorities because they alleged that he was being uncooperative.
When they searched the vehicle, police found an open container of gin. One of YG’s associates was taken into custody because of an outstanding warrant. Another was cited for the alcohol, and YG himself was given a ticket for not wearing a seatbelt and released. Police apparently originally pulled the car over because it had paper plates.
This story brings to mind another recent incident of Southern California police handcuffing a prominent, black male member of the music community during a traffic stop. Last month, Wyclef Jean was temporarily detained by Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies when the car he was driving matched the description of a different vehicle that had been a part of an armed robbery. As Jean explained on Instagram…
“I was asked by the police to Put my hands up. Then I was told do not move. I was instantly hand cuffed before being asked to identify myself and before being told why. In the process I said my name and told them they have wrong person. They proceeded to ignore me and I was treated like a criminal. I am sure no father wants his sons or daughters to see him in Handcuffs especially if he is innocent. As some one who has law enforcers in my family, I was appalled by the bahavior of the LAPD.”
