Louisville, Kentucky-based singer-songwriter Joan Shelley is a veteran folk artist who creates songs that soothe and, at the same time, stir your emotions. Next week, Shelley will release her fourth full-length album, Joan Shelley, via No Quarter Records. Today, the new album — produced by Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy — is streaming over at NPR and you should really give it a listen.
Shelley’s singular, spare voice and songwriting shines with Tweedy’s bare-bones production of the new album. While Shelley has consistently created essential folk music throughout her career, this album seems to be a statement of truth and self for her. Appropriately self-titled, Shelley declares with this record that she knows who she is and has mastered her one-of-a-kind sound.
Shelley already released two singles off of the warm self-titled record, “Wild Indifference,” and “Where I’ll Find You,” which you can listen to below.
