Draymond Green believes that athletes deserve better protection from racist fans in the stands. As the sports world continues to react to the Adam Jones incident in Boston’s Fenway Park, more athletes are relaying their bad experiences with racially-charged taunts.
Green detailed some of his experiences in a piece published by ESPN’s The Undefeated on Wednesday.
“I’ve gotten the N-word, all of that. I’d rather not get into [where]. A few places, especially being that it is me. Athletes are just not protected in that regard. Maybe something like [the Adam Jones incident] will help,” Green told The Undefeated on Tuesday night before the Warriors’ 106-94 win over the Utah Jazz in the opener of their life second-round playoff series.
Green expressing optimism in the face of the story is refreshing, and also a good point. What Jones experienced on Monday night isn’t the first case of racist heckling in sports history, it’s just one of the biggest stories in recent memory because he said something about it in postgame.
Now that athletes are speaking out about incidents they’ve experienced and teams like the Red Sox have been forced to respond and address the actions of their fans, it’s more likely that something will actually change.
