There’s a reason Stranger Things season two is premiering on Halloween.
Finn Wolfhard — who is both an actor on the hit Netflix series, and the fake name I use to sign guestbooks — insisted the new season “will be a lot [darker]. A lot more horror oriented. I think people are going to like it more than the first season.” In an interview with Gold Derby, producer Shawn Levy agreed with Wolfhard’s spooky, scary assessment, adding, “I think overall the kind of forces of evil that are inherent in season two make that Demogorgon look quaint in retrospect.” Levy is “forbidden to say so very much,” but luckily for Stranger Things fans, the Super Bowl trailer did the talking for him.
It’s safe to assume that spider-monster is the “evil” Levy is referring to, because a) spiders are bad, and b) the Duffer Brothers presumably have a much higher budget to work with in season two. If there’s one thing their idol, Steven Spielberg, taught them, it’s that you always go bigger in the sequel (and hopefully go better than The Lost World: Jurassic Park).
Another big season-to-season change: outside help. Every episode in season one was directed by either Levy or the Duffers, but in season two, Levy said, “We’ve had two other directors come in and do episodes: Andrew Stanton and Rebecca Thomas and those episodes are turning out great.”
Stranger Things season two debuts on October 31.
