The first UFC event in Long Island history hosted native son and former champion Chris Weidman who was desperate for a win. Since losing his belt to Luke Rockhold in 2015, he would lose to Yoel Romero and then to new Bellator signee Gegard Mousasi. Meanwhile, Kelvin Gastelum was stringing wins together at welterweight and beating up Tim Kennedy, Vitor Belfort and others at middleweight. A win over Weidman would be huge for the up and comer.

For a while, it seemed like Gastelum was going to win. He dropped Weidman early, but then the former middleweight’s size made it way too hard for Gastelum (who was game), to overcome.
