The Pelicans Owner Forgot Anthony Davis’ Name In A Court Deposition

Anthony Davis says he’s happy in New Orleans, but if you asked Pelicans owner Tom Benson about Davis’s future he might say “wait, who’s Anthony Davis?” Benson had trouble remembering the star of his basketball team in a court deposition for a lawsuit he’s being taken to court over.

The New Orleans Advocate obtained a copy of the deposition, and it included a set of questions where a photo of Anthony Davis was involved. Benson, surprisingly, couldn’t come up with his franchise player’s name in the exchange.

During another set of questions, apparently aimed at establishing how close Benson and Henry had been, Benson was shown a photo of the two men with Pelicans star Anthony Davis.

“Who is this?” Williams asked.

“It’s Rodney and a basketball player,” Benson said. “Oh, hell, I forget his name. Let me — he’s a great player for us. Tell me his name, and I will tell you yes or no.”

Williams said Anthony Davis.

Benson said, “Yes, that’s it.”

Benson is 90, and his lapses in memory are actually a crucial part of the lawsuit. His former assistant says the team discriminated against him by firing him, while Benson says his performance suffered. It’s a strange case, but it’s also equally alarming that a team’s owner forgot the name of his best player, especially when there have been rumors of trade talk about said player.
