Danny Trevathan delivered one of the most brutal, unnecessary hits in recent memory on Thursday Night Football, and now he’s paying the price. The Chicago Bears defender was suspended two games by the NFL after his brutal hit on Green Bay Packers wideout Davante Adams.
Adams stayed down after the hit and had to be carted off the field. Amazingly, Trevathan was not ejected on the play, though he did get a personal foul penalty for the hit.
The vicious helmet-to-helmet hit drew ire from plenty of people, and most expected he would miss time. That time, the NFL announced Saturday, is two games.

NFL vice president of football operations Jon Runyan announced the suspension on the “unnecessary roughness” grounds. It’s still pretty remarkable that Trevathan was allowed to finish out the game, but it seems like the NFL is making up for it a bit here.
Trevathan can appeal the suspension under the collective bargaining agreement, but must be appealed within three business days. If Trevathan will not appeal, he is eligible to return to the Bears active roster on October 16 after Chicago plays the Baltimore Ravens.
The suspension comes at a tough time for the Bears, who are kind of a mess at 1-3 right now. Trevathan’s hit was a clear frustration move. Now, he’ll have to watch helpless as Chicago tries to turn it around.
UPDATE: The NFL will drop Trevathan’s suspension down to one game, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

Trevathan is now slated to miss Chicago’s Week 5 matchup against the Minnesota Vikings, which is a Monday Night Football game, and would return the following week when the Bears travel to Baltimore.
