Derek Carr Is Out 2-6 Weeks With The Same Spine Fracture Injury Tony Romo Suffered In 2014

Oakland’s franchise quarterback could miss some extended time with a spine fracture, specifically a transverse process fracture which Tony Romo suffered in 2014. The transverse process is the small bone that sticks out on the side of the spine, and ironically, Romo was calling the Raiders game against the Broncos on Sunday and once again made an accurate call from the booth.

Thankfully, this fracture won’t effect Carr’s long-term health or playing career. Depending on his pain tolerance, he could be back as early as two weeks from now, but the official word from the Raiders is that he’s out two to six weeks.

Raiders backup EJ Manuel, who filled in for Carr in limited action against Denver Sunday, will start in Week 5 against the Ravens. Beyond this week, the Raiders have the Chargers, Chiefs, Bills, Dolphins, and Patriots on deck. They have a bye week in Week 10.

This is a massive blow to the hopes of Raiders fans, who, before the season, believed the Raiders were fielding a Super Bowl-worthy team in the final years before the Raiders moved to Las Vegas. At 2-2 and without their quarterback, making it to the playoffs could be difficult. Last season, the Raiders made it to the dance but Carr broke his fibula in Week 16 and the team lost in the first round.
