Dear Fox, Please Have Vin Scully Call Game 7 Of The World Series

Who else is ready for Game 7 of the World Series? This has been an incredible series between the Dodgers and the Astros, and as Joe Buck astutely pointed out at the end of Los Angeles’ Game 6 victory, this series has been too good to not need seven games to decide a champion.

But here’s the deal. Buck — who gets a lot of crap, admittedly some of it undeserved — is in the booth with John Smoltz for Fox. They’ve been fine! They have been a perfectly fine duo that has done a nice job balancing insight with the drama that has been so prominent during this series.

There is also zero circumstance under which the two should call Game 7. This is not an indictment on them or anything, it’s just that there’s a ten hundred thousand million billion percent chance that Vin Scully will be in attendance, and it would be a shame if he did not get the opportunity to call the game.

Scully retired last season after 67 seasons as the voice of Dodgers baseball. He was involved with the organization from 1960 to 2017. The man was doing this back when the team was in Brooklyn. Additionally, Scully has stuck around and has been to World Series games in Chavez Ravine, including throwing out the first pitch (kinda) and causing the stadium to erupt before Game 2.

Basically, we know Scully is going to be there, we know the man is the voice of Dodgers baseball, and we know this is the first World Series Game 7 in the history of Dodgers Stadium. This makes so much sense that it would be borderline maddening if it did not happen.

And the great part is Scully could do the game all by himself! He spent his career calling nine-inning baseball games all alone, and would oftentimes tell delightful stories that were more captivating than the games themselves. Fox wouldn’t need to worry about chemistry with Buck or Smoltz — they can spend their Wednesday evenings enjoying what should be a tremendous game. If they want another person up in the booth, I dunno they can go get Larry King to come sit up there and regale us with stories or something. I feel like Larry King would enjoy this opportunity.

Also, Buck is 100 percent into the idea. He said this in a story about, um, how Scully said he doesn’t want to work a World Series game, which is a problem that I will ignore as it does not work for the appeal that I’m already like 400 words into.

“I swear on my late father, to have Vin come do some of the series with us and in my place would be an honor,” Buck said. “If someone can hypnotize him and make him say ‘yes,’ I will drive and pick him up myself. He knows I feel this way, as does Fox and he continues to say no, unfortunately.”

So yeah. It would be tremendous if Scully changed his mind. And once he does, please let him call Game 7, Fox. It would be the best thing. Baseball in October — er, November now — is all about big moments, and for the last nearly seven decades, every big moment involving the Dodgers has prominently involved Vin Scully.
