Natalie Portman’s first and only appearance on SNL was in 2006, when she hosted with musical guest Fall Out Boy. (You might remember that episode for the “Natalie Raps” Digital Short.) Nothing has changed since then, apparently, because Fall Out Boy released an album last week, and Portman is returning to Studio 8H on February 3 with “New Rules” pop breakout Dua Lipa.
Well, maybe a few things have changed since then. Twelve years ago, Portman, fresh off the Star Wars prequels, was promoting V for Vendetta; now, she’ll be there for Annihilation, the latest high-concept film from Ex Machina director Alex Garland. It will be interesting to see if SNL, which recently asked “What Even Matters Anymore?” in the Jessica Chastain-hosted episode, will acknowledge Portman’s viral clip at the Golden Globes, where she introduced the Best Director category with, “Here are the all-male nominees.”
The Oscar-nominated actress also recently made headlines for her speech at the Women’s March in Los Angeles. While discussing the sexualization she faced as a young celebrity, Portman said, “At 13-years-old, the message from our culture was clear to me. I felt the need to cover my body and to inhibit my expression and my work in order to send my own message to the world that I’m someone worthy of safety and respect. The response to my expression, from small comments about my body to more threatening deliberate statements, served to control my behavior through an environment of sexual terrorism.”
