The fires that have been decimating parts of Northern and Southern California still rage, and attempts to contain them have been slowed by the arrival, starting Sunday, of powerful winds. So far, according to CNN, 23 have been killed and 110 are reported missing. On top of that, hundreds of thousands have been displaced and thousands of residences have been destroyed.
Being that the state is home to many celebrities, some of those have belonged to the rich and famous. One of those is Gerard Butler. The actor — most recently seen in the submarine thriller Hunter Killer — tweeted a picture of his Malibu house, which has been reduced to ash in the most destructive fire in the state’s history, and the third deadliest.

Butler is one of a number of celebrities whose lives have been put in danger, some of whom have taken to social media to show the devastation, thank firefighters, and put their travails into perspective by reminding the world that many others are suffering as well.
Those include Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson, who posted a picture of his smoldering home. “The interior is cooked but the sole fireman needs to ensure that other homes in my neighborhood don’t catch fire,” he wrote. “Thank God and this firefighter, they didn’t.”
Some have been lucky. Fellow filmmaker, Guillermo del Toro, of Best Picture Oscar winner The Shape of Water, posted that his home, which houses numerous rare movie memorabilia, only suffered “minor smoke damage.” Alyssa Milano tweeted that her home was still “in jeopardy” but they were safe. Milano’s Charmed co-star Shannen Doherty also made it public that she was safe, as did Cher, Wendie Malick, and Robin Thicke.
Some structures that have been destroyed by the fires include Santa Monica’s legendary Paramount Ranch, which has been used for Westerns — and Western-type productions, like the hit show Westworld — since 1927. The same goes for the Augoura Hills mansion, which has been the home for The Bachelor and The Bachelorette.
As of now, evacuation orders were being lifted for some areas in the two Southern California fires. Please donate to a charity, such as the California Fire Foundation, to help those who’ve been affected.
