Seth Rollins‘ second Universal Championship reign has seen a portion of the WWE fanbase turn on the Beastslayer, even before the widely disliked ending to his Hell In A Cell main event. A significant reason for that is that Rollins keeps making public statements that rub people the wrong way, from his comments about Jon Moxley leaving the company to a Twitter fight with Will Ospreay that he somehow lost to shots at fans who criticize WWE on social media. Rollins has also been talking about All Elite Wrestling star Kenny Omega, and recently clarified that his comments came both a place of respect for the other wrestler and a place of trying to make interesting headlines.
At a convention earlier this month, Rollins was asked about whether he’d want to wrestle Omega in the future and replied with basically a little promo for a match that’s unlikely to happen, saying, “When Kenny’s done playing in the minor leagues over there… Then he can come and work at the absolute top professional wrestling company in the world, in front of the most people, and make the most money, and have the biggest matches, which is with me at WrestleMania.”
On Corey Graves’ podcast – which it turns out is a more “honest” take on WWE in that Graves is allowed to say WWE “no-no words” like “Kenny Omega” and refer to AEW – the Smackdown announcer asked Rollins about that statement that made some people angry/prompted some people to make fun of him online. Rollins said that he opted to trash talk AEW in his answer because a completely respectful reply “doesn’t make headlines, man! That’s boring!”
Rollins followed up by saying that he would like to see Omega in WWE (transcript from WrestleZone):
“Kenny’s never proven himself in the WWE, so that’s what I’m saying. It is what it is. WWE is the top of the mountain, I’m the guy sitting at the top of the top of the mountain. So if Kenny wants to come and like I said, ‘play in the major leagues, get out of the minor leagues’ or whatever, that’s fine. The bottom line is, I’d love Kenny to come to me cause I’m not going to him anytime soon.”
Is this the end of a battle in the new Wrestling Wars or will Omega respond? Was this even a notable battle in the first place? Is Rollins going to annoy people all the time now, or was he redeemed by pinning Erick Rowan with a forklift? These are some of the relatively minor WWE-related questions that have come up this week.
