Seattle hip-hop duo Macklemore and Ryan Lewis were nominated for seven Grammy awards this year, including one in the Song of the Year category for “Same Love,” the marriage equality anthem featuring Mary Lambert. Though not as successful as their other two singles, “Same Love” was a viral hit, and you can see video after video of marriage proposals taking place on stage at Macklemore concerts. The producers of the Grammys are taking it one step further and having 34 couples get married during the performance of “Same Love” during tonight’s show.
The couples will be of various ages, races and orientations and the wedding will be officiated by Queen Latifah. Madonna will also be performing with the group. One of the couples to be married is Ryan Lewis’ sister and her fiance. Of the event Lewis told the New York Times:
“A night that is already tremendous for me, for the music,” Mr. Lewis said, “but to have my sister get married and my family there watching it — that makes it a whole other level of amazing.”
Macklemore and Ryan Lewis have already caused controversy for this years Grammys with their nominations, and I know as a resident of Seattle if I never hear “Thrift Shop” again it wouldn’t bother me a bit. “Same Love” is a beautiful song, though, and hopefully the wedding leans more towards the inspiring and less towards the gimmicky.
