Like many of you, I fondly remember the MTV Unplugged series from the 1990’s when Nirvana performed a heart-crushing set and a Noel Gallagher-led Oasis performed while his brother sat up above smoking cigarettes. It was a cool series that was meant to “unplug” artists who used electric guitars and such. You know, strip them down to their artistic soul.
Well, forget about all that grandpa, because in Miley Cyrus’ new MTV Unplugged Special she performs a duet with Madonna and spanks her.
“So, it sounds super lame, but as a pop star it’s pretty cool performing with Madonna,” the 21-year-old said after singing a mash-up of Madonna’s 2000 track “Don’t Tell Me” and Cyrus’ hit “We Can’t Stop.” Cyrus spanks the 55-year-old Queen of Pop during the duet, which made Madonna’s Britney Spears kiss feel like it was way more than 10 years ago.
Oh but don’t think this is some kind of fancy disco without electricity, no sir:
This is Cyrus’ show, and it’s a hoedown. Backed by a seven-piece band on a stage decorated with hay bales, Cyrus gives her acoustic songs a country touch, adding a twang to “4×4” and “Bangerz.”
“I’m from Nashville,” she said. “And since I couldn’t make all of you guys go back home with me, I tried to bring Nashville here for the night.”
But of course, this is Miley so it’s going to be SO WEIRD U GUYS:
Cyrus also includes elements from her more recent shows: a little person, a giant woman and two men in a horse costume. She works in a fair amount of curse words, tongue extensions and sultry moves as she performs songs including “Wrecking Ball,” ”Adore You” and “Drive.”
Time however has the best summary of the special, that is also somehow a form of Game of Thrones fan-fiction:
For Cyrus, it seemed, stripping down the music didn’t require stripping down her antics: She twerked with the faux horse, ground her pelvis into its back, and petted the little person’s hair; she grabbed her crotch and gyrated relentlessly. Fans hoping for emotional gravity received were met with twangy Western versions of her album tracks and oversexed hyperactivity.
NOPE. I prefer to remember MTV Unplugged like this:
