Aaron Sorkin’s The Newsroom can come off as smug and sanctimonious as it tries to sell us on the value of the fourth estate as an entity that has its eyes open, its soul clean, and its fists swinging. But when you get past that, the show has been a nice showcase for performers like Jeff Daniels, John Gallagher, and Olivia Munn. Listening to Aaron Sorkin’s lyrical dialogue isn’t the worst way to spend a Sunday night, either.
Sadly (or not, depending on your perspective) The Newsroom will come to an end after the upcoming third season and by the look of the above trailer it seems as though Sorkin is looking to go out on high while focusing on the Boston Marathon Bombing, the rising impact of social media on organized news, and what seems like a Snowdenesque security breach that ensnares Neal (Dev Patel).
For all of its flaws, The Newsroom is a show that has always taken big swings on important issues and that’s a rare thing that is probably going to be a lot rarer when the show leaves the air since those kinds of things are destined to be polarizing and it’s hard to carry a large fanbase when you piss off a lot people. TV viewers don’t want to turn off the news to turn on the news all over again. People want escapism — we’ve seen that with the rise of fantastical comic book inspired shows and other shows that are extremely detached from reality like Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead — but The Newsroom has been the antithesis of that and there’s value in that. Even if the show has felt like a lecture at times.
The Newsroom returns to HBO on November 9th.
