This summer USA ordered a show called Mr. Robot. You may remember this because I almost exploded with joy about the idea of a television show titled Mr. Robot. Here is the description, in case it somehow slipped your mind.
Mr. Robot centers on a young programmer, Elliot, who suffers from a debilitating anti-social disorder and decides that he can only connect to people by hacking them. He wields his skills as a weapon to protect the people that he cares about and finds himself in the intersection between a cybersecurity firm he works for and the underworld organizations that are recruiting him to bring down corporate America.
One thing left unexplained at the time was who — or what — exactly was the titular Mr. Robot in the series. Is Mr. Robot an actual robot, with metal and circuits and such, or is it the name of a person? Is Elliot Mr. Robot? Is it his alter-ego? So many questions, no answers. Until today. Please God let Robot be his actual last name and not just a nickname. “Coming this summer to USA, Christian Slater is Carl Robot, anarchist hacker extraordinaire.” I would like that.
Anyway, to give you an idea of what a magical time this is for television, Christian Slater is starring as a mysterious underground anarchist hacker named “Mr. Robot” in a series called Mr. Robot, and it is still only THE SECOND MOST RIDICULOUS-SOUNDING HACKER SHOW IN DEVELOPMENT. The top spot, today and forever, belongs to CBS’s upcoming CSI spinoff CSI: Cyber, which, again, stars James Van Der Beek as “a savant when it comes to weaponry, vehicles and bombs” who will “often put himself at risk to seek permanent justice”; Bow Wow as “a savant with cyber intrusions” who “will be working for the Feds while trying to keep his fingertips out of the Deep Web where he was groomed to be one of the most prolific hackers in the world”; and Luke Perry as a former hotshot FBI agent who became “a “futurist” for the private sector” after a “classified falling out.”
