The glove that Yankee fan Jeffrey Maier used in the above video to steal a home run for Derek Jeter in the 1996 ALCS is being auctioned. It’s expected to fetch upwards of $50,000.
Maier was then a 12-year-old who interfered with the fly ball just in front of the right field wall during Game 1 in the 1996 ALCS between the Yankees and Orioles. His clear interference prevented O’s right fielder Tony Tarasco from making a play, but umpire Rich Garcia still awarded Jeter with a game-tying home run. Bernie Williams would then hit a game-winning home run in the bottom of the 11th. The Yankees eventually won the series in five games.
Later, they would beat the Atlanta Braves in the World Series, marking their first championship since 1978 and beginning a dynasty that would see them win four World Series titles in five seasons. But it all started with a 12-year-old fan’s interference that wasn’t called.
Maier sold the glove to a collector years ago and it’s believed that this collector is the current owner who has put it up for auction. As of this writing the current bid is at $18,000.
