Right before Chappie was set to hit theaters, Neill Blomkamp released some concept art for an Alien movie that, at the time, was nothing more than a pipe dream… until Fox actually decided to sign the man to a deal to make it. Now, with the movie cemented as his next film, Blomkamp is speaking about it in detail, and according to him, there’s potential for his story to extend beyond a single movie.
From Empire:
So when I started speaking to [Sigourney Weaver], I just wanted to know more about the process of making the first two films. The first two are the ones that I care about. Then I started to realize there was a whole film – at least a film, if not more – that still contained Ripley, which I was really surprised by.
Considering the name of the game these days is all about franchising, it’s no surprise Blomkamp is giving thought to more than a single film. If his vision works, it’s entirely possible that Fox will want him back for a follow-up, and he’s going to need ideas for such a scenario. But right now, the man should be putting all his energy into making a single great movie that can stand with the likes of the first two Alien movies.
