It seemed like a throwaway joke at the end of a movie that was filled with throwaway humor, but the trailer for Machete Kills Again… in Space actually had some truth to it. Despite Machete Kills being critically loathed and a box office bust that earned just $15 million, it seems that Robert Rodriguez and Danny Trejo are set to team up one more time to wrap up the adventure of the vest-wearing vigilante with a gift for killing. And I say “one more time” because if this story really is true, then we’d have to hope that Rodriguez isn’t holding onto any hopes for Machete Journeys to the Center of the Earth or A Machete in King Arthur’s Court.
Matt Artz from Halloween Daily News caught up with Trejo at Mad Monster Party in Charlotte, North Carolina recently, and the 70-year-old Snickers-loving badass offered the exclusive news:
Trejo tells us, “Robert and I are going to start to do Machete Kills in Space, so that’s going to be awesome. Absolutely. We’re going to be working on it this year.”
That news post was published on April 2, so if it’s an April Fools joke, it’s one of those really clever thinkers that takes place after the fact. But the one thing I took away from my quick and uneventful conversation with Trejo about his Super Bowl commercial was that this is a dude who loves his legacy and has no plans on retiring from the roles that keep him famous.
So, unless HDN’s upcoming full interview with Trejo reveals a punchline on this, we should probably expect Machete Kills Again… in Space to fill TV networks with too many clips in 2016.
