It was inevitable. At some point in all the warmly positive hoopla regarding Ireland’s popular vote for same-sex marriage, someone with a public voice was going to sh*t all over it. Welp, someone did, and that someone was none other than the United Kingdom’s lost son Morrissey.
As the Hollywood Reporter notes, the former lead singer of The Smiths took to the True to You blog to make his voice heard:
The people, once again, teach the church. The people, once again, teach the politicians.
Now, Ireland, please abolish fur farms and factory-farming and transportation of live animals, and welcome yourself completely into the 21st century.
Unsurprisingly, it should be noted that these sentiments come from the same man who praised the goring of a Mexican bullfighter back in January. Morrissey is an outspoken animal rights activist, so despite Ireland’s monumental contribution to democracy, his use of the moment to espouse his own views isn’t all that shocking.
Also, there’s the matter of his writing his pseudo-congratulations from Sydney, Australia. You know, inside the magical nation in which spiders rain from the sky and Johnny Depp’s dogs are not welcome.
