John Wall, Bradley Beal, and Kevin Durant? Sounds pretty good to us. According to Grantland’s Zach Lowe, some league executives believe Durant has already narrowed his 2016 free agency choices to his hometown Washington Wizards and the incumbent Oklahoma City Thunder.
In a typically excellent piece on the currently woebegone Thunder, Lowe touches on Durant’s impending free agency in two summers’ time. While acknowledging that suitors will come from all corners, he also mentions that some believe the reigning MVP will only be choosing between his old home and new one:
That intel is all over the place, by the way. Some teams are optimistic it will be open season, and others have heard rumblings that Durant has already made it known it will come down to the Thunder and Wizards. Nobody really knows.
Note the qualifiers here. Lowe isn’t reporting anything concrete, and readily admits as much. It hardly takes an informed source to come to the conclusion that KD will seriously consider Washington in free agency – there’s been smoke headed that direction for months on end.
It only makes sense that some team front office personnel would hear the same. So while this is encouraging news for the Wizards, it’s hardly more than we already knew. Durant has always maintained that he’s keeping his options open for July 2016, and has made no secret of his appreciation for LeBron James returning to his roots to play with the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Washington is indeed a legitimate contender to land Durant, and Lowe’s intel only supports that long-held assumption. Nothing more, no matter how much optimism Wizards fans will glean from this tidbit.
Do you think Durant will sign with Washington in 2016?
