There was a time this season when Minnesota Timberwolves rookie Andrew Wiggins wasn’t dunking as often as expected. Plays like this make it seem long, long ago.
But this isn’t some run-of-the mill and-1 slam. Look who Wiggins soars past en route to the dunk – that’s Rudy Gobert, arguably the league’s best rim-protector. The 7’2 Frenchman has stymied basketball’s best finishers with ease since being inserted as a permanent starter last month, spurring the Utah Jazz to the league’s best defensive rating over that timeframe.
But Wiggins cares not for for Gobert’s paint preeminence. This is exactly the type of aggression so many assumed the Canadian sensation lacked following his freshman season at Kansas, and it’s a trait we’ve seen more and more as his imminently award-winning rookie season has continued.
We can’t wait to watch Wiggins grow up. For now, though, we’re just as excited for the next time he meets his fellow rising star at the rack.
