All Generations Of The NBA World Mourn The Death Of Anthony Mason

The NBA lost a brother this morning with the passing of Anthony Mason. The former New York Knicks and Charlotte Hornets star died in Manhattan after succumbing to effects of congestive heart failure. He was 48 years-old.

Though the New York icon hadn’t played in the league since retiring in 2003, his death has been met with sweeping sympathy from players, coaches, and fans of all generations.

First, a statement from his family courtesy of Anthony Mason, Jr., a senior forward at St. John’s.

“First, I want to thank all those who offered prayers and well-wishes for my Father, our family really appreciated it. Overnight New York City and the world lost a legend, a friend, a brother..but more than anything our father, Anthony Mason. As you all would expect our father — Big Mase — put up an incredible fight dealing with a severe heart issues. I’m wishing this was something else I was writing, but Pops we’ve got to let you know we love you and know you’ll always be with us.

“I ask at this time that you respect our family’s privacy with regard to questions as our family takes the time to mourn.”

Michael Jordan:

“I’m deeply saddened to learn about the passing of Anthony Mason. Mase was one of the toughest competitors of his era. While on the Hornets, he was beloved by fans throughout the Carolinas for his hard-nosed play and skill on the court. The Hornets organization extends its condolences to his entire family.”

Patrick Ewing:

“My heart is heavy after learning we lost Anthony Mason last night. We were teammates on the Knicks for five great seasons. Mase came to play every night and was always ready to go to battle with me every time we stepped on the court together. I will remember him for his strength, determination and perseverance. My thoughts are with his family. May he rest in peace.”

Pat Riley:

“News like this is not only sad, but it’s tragic. Anthony Mason was a very young man with a great family and friends. To lose him quickly during his journey, especially to those of us that knew him, hurts. We had a great season in Miami experiencing Anthony as an All-Star with the HEAT, and I also had the privilege of coaching him for four years in New York, where he helped take us to the brink of a championship. There were so many great moments we shared that I will never forget. Our prayers and sympathies are with his family. May god bless his soul.”
