There are just some plays that are absolutely unnecessary, even if you’re trying to make a play on the ball. What Blake Griffin does to Taj Gibson here is a perfect example. Griffin bites on Gibson’s pump fake, and when Gibson goes airborne a split-second later, Blake takes a huge swing that, instead of getting any ball, goes smack across Gibson’s face.
Now, the play wasn’t malicious, or at least it doesn’t appear to be so. But it was incredibly dangerous, and for that reason, Griffin was assessed a flagrant two foul and ejected from the game.
