Here’s a little something to get you down on a Thursday: No matter how tall you are, you probably don’t have the same amount of ups that Boston Celtics point guard Isaiah Thomas has. And he’s listed at 5’9, which means he’s probably closer to 5’7.
Thomas, a fifth-year pro who’s entering his first full season with Boston, showed some of that athleticism in warm-ups before Tuesday night’s game against Olimpia Milano. The game, which Boston easily won 124-91, was part of a double-header in Europe for the NBA’s preseason Global Games. Thomas would go on to finish with 18 points, two rebounds and four assists off the bench.
The Celtics are obviously invested in starting point guard Marcus Smart, who logged 27 minutes per game last season. But against Olimpia Milano, Thomas played 21 minutes, essentially splitting time with Smart. It’s the right time to get Thomas as much playing time as possible, especially because the organization is likely to rely more heavily on Smart once the season begins. Still, Thomas can score and could provide the Celtics with an offensive spark coming off the bench. While it’s unlikely he’ll be doing any dunking on anyone this season, he certainly can if presented with the opportunity.
