The Boston College men’s basketball season mercifully came to an end on Tuesday after they were blown out by Florida State in the first round of the ACC Tournament. The Eagles finished the year with a 7-25 record, including an astonishing 0-19 tally against conference opponents — the first time that’s ever happened in ACC history.
After his final game for the Eagles, BC senior center Dennis Clifford was asked about his favorite memory from his college playing career. It’s not surprising that such a question prompted an emotional response from Clifford. The sudden realization that your college days are coming to an end can be a very tough pill to swallow, but what was surprising was his answer.
Clifford was asked what his best memory of playing college basketball will be. He choked up and put his head down, pausing for more than 20 seconds. When he looked back up, his face was red, his eyes were welling.
His answer: “Going out to eat.”
Listen, I enjoy going out to eat as much as the next guy, but THAT’S your favorite memory from your four years as a BC Eagle? It’s not a great testament to the school’s basketball program, especially when you consider the fact that those boys almost got E Coli from eating at Chipotle earlier this year.
It’s likely that Clifford was trying to convey that his favorite part of college was the bonding and friendships with his teammates, but just found it tough to put into words as he was overcome with emotion. Then again, the Eagles were never over .500 during Clifford’s time as a player, so it’s legitimately possible that going out to eat was the highlight of his four years.
Either way, that quote is hilarious. Depressing, but hilarious.
