It’s been noted that Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry is a huge fan of the Carolina Panthers. His fandom has apparently led to him building a friendship with Panthers quarterback Cam Newton, as we learned in a story on the two from The MMQB. According to Curry, the pair are friends, but they motivate one another with their performances on the field/court, as both guys are MVP candidates and are the leaders for the best teams in their respective sports.
The two also have a friendly rivalry when it comes to NBA 2k. The pair have never actually played, but according to Curry, there is a lot of smack talk that gets exchanged between them.
Lately, a frequent topic of those text conversations has been superiority in the video game NBA 2K.
“We’ve been talking a lot of smack about that,” Curry says.
The level of the smack that Curry’s bringing, at least based on this story, cannot come even close to matching what Newton is throwing down. According to the Panthers’ quarterback, he has thumbs that were blessed by the Lord himself, and there’s no way that he would lose to the reigning NBA MVP.
“Listen, man, I’m trying to tell not only him, but also the world, my thumbs are God-given,” he says. “My thumbs have been touched. I need to start coming out with this promotion company—Golden Thumbs promotions. It’s part of the Whoop Ass Tour. I can come with it to Oakland, but I don’t think he wants those problems.”
Newton could have stopped talking smack right there and it still would have been one of the best lines of trash talk in the history of gaming. But because he’s Cam Newton and because he goes in on everything he does, he decided to bring Curry’s first name into the discussion.
“You tell Stephen…” Newton starts, before pausing. “What’s his middle name?”
“Stephen is his middle name,” someone from the Panthers’ media relations department chimes in. “His first name is Wardell.”
“There ya go,” Newton says. “You tell Wardell Stephen Curry that Cameron Newton is going to thrash him.”
It kind of goes without saying, but we really need a live stream of a game of 2k between these two.
