No one has a more vested interest in the continuing drama between DeAndre Jordan and the Dallas Mavericks than the media outlets covering it (trust us, we should know). So even though there aren’t any new developments to speak of, ESPN is stirring the pot in anticipation of Jordan’s first game in Dallas since the free agency shenanigans.
The spot is essentially just a series of clips of Mark Cuban looking mad, and DeAndre looking alternately upset and joyous. But the soundtrack is really what makes the clip. It’s Phil Collins’ “Against All Odds,” and the lyrics that played during the commercial are just about as nakedly desperate as any song pleading for reconciliation can get:
Take a good look at me now
‘Cause I’ll still be standing here
And you coming back to me is against all odds
It’s the chance I’ve got to take
Now imagine Blake Griffin and Doc Rivers blasting that out of a boombox held aloft outside Jordan’s house, and you begin to understand why he might have come back to the Clippers. Sure, “In Your Eyes” is the Phil Collins song Lloyd Dobler was actually playing in Say Anything…, but that might have only been because “Against All Odds” is too desperate and hammy for a romantic movie. But it’s not too desperate and hammy for an ESPN basketball promo, that’s for sure.
