D’Angelo Russell was our highest rated draft prospect in the West region of the NCAA Tournament. Plays like this make it very, very easy to see why.
One of the biggest quibbles about the brilliant Ohio State freshman is that he might not be a “true” point guard, and is instead a playmaking wing. We’re dubious those distinctions even matter, but also believe Russell to be one of the most natural floor generals we’ve seen on the college level in some time. He’s an excellent ballhandler, intelligent table-setter, and has the vision reserved for the game’s top creators.
Who cares if Russell is 6-5 and takes 15 shots per game? James Harden sure seems like a pretty viable playmaker to us; is his position ever discussed?
Unfortunately, even the best players can perform poorly on the biggest stage. Russell scored just nine points on dismal 3-of-19 shooting in his team’s 73-58 loss to Arizona on Saturday, likely ending his college career. No worries, though – he’ll be dazzling us for years to come at the next level.
