Saturday night’s NBA Summer League contest between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Philadelphia 76ers was billed as No. 1 vs. No. 2. No, not because those are the two best teams in the league – based on last year’s standings, it’s actually the exact opposite of that.
No, this is 1 vs. 2 because this game features the first meeting between the No. 1 overall pick in the 2016 Draft, Ben Simmons, and Brandon Ingram, the dude who went one pick after him. Unfortunately, it didn’t totally live up to that billing, because outside of some more dazzling passes from Simmons, the rookies have been so-so.
If you wanted some highlights, though, don’t worry: Jerami Grant decided to welcome Lakers rookie big man Ivica Zubac to the NBA with a monster dunk to make things exciting in Las Vegas.
The Sixers’ third-year forward caught a pass on the baseline, took a power dribble, sized up Zubac, and absolutely obliterated him with a one-handed jam. To add insult to injury, Grant stepped over Zubac mid-air, giving a sort of Vince Carter on Frederic Weis vibe to the dunk, and added a stare down afterwards. Grant is a veteran in the league by the Sixers’ standards, and he emphatically introduced a rookie to what it’s like to be in the NBA.
