A lot has been made about Thon Maker’s age this summer. Just before the NBA Draft, it was reported that the Sudanese native was anywhere from three to five years older than the age he’s listed at (19). Emerging “proof” found in things like old yearbooks and newsletters seemed to strengthen those claims, enough so that some teams were reportedly scared away from taking Maker in the first round.
But, ultimately, the Milwaukee Bucks selected Maker with the 10th overall pick in the draft, and one of Maker’s old passports may have finally proved that he’s actually 19 after all.
It appears that won’t stop the jokes, though.
As the Dallas Mavericks took on Bucks in their Summer League matchup on Wednesday, Mavs owner Mark Cuban appeared on ESPN’s broadcast, where he was asked what he thought about Maker as a player. He had some fun with the response.
“For a 40-year-old, he can still play!”
That’s a pretty good joke. And, for what it’s worth, Cuban went on to say he was just joking around and that “Maker can play, he’s really good.”
There you have it. Maker brings talent and a veteran presence to the Bucks’ locker room.
