The game was also directed by renowned filmmaker Spike Lee. The NBA 2K franchise has used celebrity collaborators before: NBA 2K13 featured Jay Z as an executive producer in 2013. Spokesman Ryan Peters told USA Today that Lee’s role was to add an actual storyline to the game.
“We just told Spike, ‘You transform the narrative, and we’ll change that into digital polygons.’ And he did that, bringing a protagonist and antagonist to the story.”
Spike Lee mentions the story he wrote and directed for NBA 2K16 centers on a basketball player named Frequency Vibrations.
