Before taking the reins as the head coach of the Golden State Warriors and becoming a title-winning mastermind, Steve Kerr was a member of TNT’s NBA coverage. During that time, he undoubtedly spent many nights alongside Craig Sager, which makes him uniquely qualified to speak about the man that inspired so many across the basketball world. On Thursday night, Kerr took the microphone in advance of his team’s game against the New York Knicks and addressed the crowd with a moving and special tribute to his fallen friend.
Kerr offered condolences to both Sager’s family and those at TNT who worked with him closely but, in spot-on fashion, his role was to tee up a moment of celebration and applause in place of a traditional moment of silence. It was a fitting choice given that Kerr spoke in-depth about Sager’s zest for life, including the enjoyment of some things (including Bud Light, golf and the Chicago Cubs) that made him the man that he was.
Craig Sager’s impact will be felt well beyond the day in which he was tragically taken from this planet and his memory will live on in those such as Steve Kerr that can speak with a glowing tone and remind everyone of just how tremendous he was.
