We all know the narrative – fans hurt George Lucas’ precious little feelings so deeply he passive-aggressively sold his company to Disney, and the House of Mouse immediately put a new Star Wars trilogy into production, but it turns out things very nearly went differently.
While we all think of Star Wars: The Force Awakens as a Disney product now, George Lucas recently admitted he was originally planning to make Episode VII himself, release it in early 2015 and then sell his company to Disney. So yes, we almost got another Lucas Star Wars, and really, selling the company right after kicking off a new trilogy would probably have made a lot of financial sense, so why didn’t Lucas do it? Because at the age of 69, he wanted to become a father again, and thought embarking on another Star Wars movie would be too much work…
“It was better for me to get out at the beginning of a new thing and I can just remove myself. The time is more important to me than the money. The only thing I really regret about Star Wars is the fact I never got to see it — I never got to be blown out of my seat when the ship came over the screen. The next one, I’ll be able to enjoy it like anybody else.”
Well, I certainly hope you enjoy it, George. I have a feeling now that he’s no longer in charge, Lucas will be the biggest angry Star Wars nerd of them all.
