The new Avengers: Age Of Ultron trailer dropped last night, and if you were expecting little more than the same footage recut for the college football crowd, you were instead surprised. Much of this trailer is new footage and most of what isn’t is put into a better context for us. So without further ado, let’s break it down!
The first hero we see is Hawkeye, conducting what appears to be an evacuation. It’s not clear from what, precisely, but the first line in the trailer, from Tony Stark, is telling: “This vulnerable world? It needs something more powerful than any of us.”
Which is immediately followed by Ultron stating “Everyone creates the thing they dread,” and, well, this:
What follows is the intro to Ultron we’ve seen before… except that puny Banner recognizes him, which ties into what we’ve been hearing about his role in creating the vicious tyrannical robot. After a few explosions, we get just a glimpse of Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch:
Followed by Banner having what sure appears to be an induced Hulk-out:
Then we get Nick Fury stating: “No matter who wins or loses, trouble always comes around.” On another note, it’s nice to see Nick’s retirement and living underground is going well. While he’s uttering that, though, we get this mysterious shot:
There are two theories currently competing over this image. The first is that we’re seeing the inside of a vibranium mine, and this is a plot-relevant Wakandan about to take a dip or something. That makes sense as Ultron will likely be 100% vibranium.
The other theory, though, is that we’re seeing an Inhuman about to be exposed to the Terrigen Mists. That actually lines up pretty well with what’s happening elsewhere in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and they do have to explain the “miracles” that are Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch.
Next up, we’ve got the line that happens before Thor gives Tony a good choking: “You’ve meddled in something you don’t understand.” Which is a stock line, but in light of A) the Inhumans connection and B) the fact that Thor probably wouldn’t classify “killer robots” as something Tony wouldn’t understand, there’s likely more to this than we think. Perhaps there’s a little bit of Asgard in Ultron?
On a side note, we have nothing relevant to say about Iron Man being shown the door, but it’s a funny GIF:
That’s more or less immediately followed by a horror-movie-esque montage that strongly hints we’re going to learn more about Black Widow’s past; note her hairstyle and the overall method of shooting. This feels a bit like a dream sequence, so this may be Scarlet Witch screwing with her head.
After some more action bits, we see another brief, fan-theory disproving shot, of what increasingly appears to be Ulysses Klaw:
The screens in the background would indicate he’s in the modern era, which would in turn indicate Serkis isn’t involved in the brief flashback to the ’40s we saw in the first trailer.
Also of interest: The Hulk has feelings for Natasha.
Ultron then mutters “I’m going to tear you apart…from the inside” before showing off some powers which he appears to have stolen from the Scarlet Witch:
That line is particularly interesting since it’s laid over this clip, which sure looks like Thor can’t control the thunder all of a sudden. We’ve slowed it down, so you can look at his face; considering we see the Scarlet Witch in the next shot, we’ll assume it’s her doing.
Finally, we get a bit more of that Hulk v. Hulkbuster scene, which would appear to confirm a few things. First, that actually is Tony in the suit; the sequence is cut so we see him inside it. Secondly, those fan theories about the Scarlet Witch messing with the Hulk’s head appear to be 100% accurate: Banner didn’t get those red eyes by smoking up in the Helicarrier men’s room.
In all, there’s a lot to chew over here, but the main takeaway is the movie looks great. May 1st can’t come soon enough.
