In Star Wars: Episode IV — A New Hope, the Mos Eisley Cantina scene originally contained a contentious scene in which HAN SHOT FIRST. Then, in 1997 and every edition since, including the recent digital HD release, George Lucas pulled some of his film magic *cough* to let us know that Greedo shot first. He even said in 2012 that he made the changes to clarify Greedo shot first. But was that really the original intention, or was Lucas trying to improve Han’s image? And how good is Han’s image now that we know (spoiler) he was secretly married during part of the original trilogy?
Ah, but the truth will eventually come out. Out it will, the truth. Yes. Because librarian Kristian Brown at the University of New Brunswick library found an interesting piece of cinematic history at the library. A version of the script written before the film started shooting. Reports The Playlist:
Dated March 15, 1976 (a little more than year before the movie opened), this is the fourth draft of the script, and it was still being referred to as “Saga I” [and] the film’s hero was named Luke Starkiller.
And here’s the money quote from Brown, which I’m putting in big-ass letters because I TOLD YOU SO, AARON. YOU SEE THIS. I TOLD YOU.
“I’ll tell you one thing, right now. Based on the script, I can tell you 100 percent, Han shot first.”
Meanwhile, Harrison Ford still doesn’t care.
