Back in January, a rumor was going around that Michael Shannon would be in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, despite (spoiler) having his neck broken by Superman in Man of Steel. According to the rumor, Lex Luthor steals the corpse of Zod (Shannon) and uses his DNA to create Doomsday, who would also be played by Shannon. It’s not entirely far-fetched; Doomsday was created by Kryptonians in the original comics, and, in All-Star Superman, he was a human injected with a formula made from Kryptonian genes.
The rumor picked up more speed seven months later, when a clip of Zod’s corpse being zipped into a body bag showed up at the two-minute mark of the Batman v Superman Comic-Con trailer. Now Michael Shannon himself has confirmed he was on the set, and boy does it sound like it got weird.
Shannon told Vulture an anecdote about getting stuck in a porta-potty on the set of Batman v Superman and having to scream for help because he had “flippers instead of hands” and couldn’t open the door.
“I was in my costume, and I couldn’t use my fingers because in the sequel I have flippers instead of hands. So I had these wax flippers on my fingers, and I couldn’t open the door, and I could hear Zack [Snyder] being like, ‘Where’s Shannon? Where the f*ck is he?’ and the whole crew was standing around. I was like, knocking on the door with my flippers, ‘Let me out of here!'”
A craft-service guy eventually heard Shannon yell for help and let him out.
Okay, but why the hell would his character have “flippers” on his hands? Who’s he playing? Shannon played coy:
“Well, I haven’t seen the trailer either, so I don’t know what I am in the trailer. I could be a toaster, or a Porsche, I don’t know.”
But an older rumor, via Heroic Hollywood, may offer an explanation. They reveal who Wonder Woman is fighting with in that Comic-Con trailer. Reportedly, she’s fighting Doomsday, and she cuts off his hand, but then a “bone blade” grows back in its place. If true, Doomsday may have lost both hands in the fight but gained two bone blades, which would explain why Shannon’s hands were covered up and kept flat for CGI purposes.
He’ll just have to avoid using the porta-potties on set from now on. He’s probably regretting the Metamucil endorsement that is totally real and not something I photoshopped.
