So Michael Shannon caused a bit of a stir when he told a funny little story to Vulture the other week about his trip to the set of Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. The story involved him being trapped in a port-o-john with flipper hands, causing the Internet to go into a tizzy over why he had flipper hands, what said flippers could be a stand in for, and what was his role in the film. If you’ve forgotten the tale, here’s a refresher from Vulture:
“I was in my costume, and I couldn’t use my fingers because in the sequel I have flippers instead of hands. So I had these wax flippers on my fingers, and I couldn’t open the door, and I could hear Zack [Snyder] being like, ‘Where’s Shannon? Where the f*ck is he?’ and the whole crew was standing around. I was like, knocking on the door with my flippers, ‘Let me out of here!’”
Well as it turns out, Shannon was mistaken. Or he got word from someone from Warner Bros. that he shouldn’t just go spilling out possible secrets to just any interviewer that asks. In a chat with The Daily Beast, Shannon reverses and clarifies his tale from the Vulture, noting that he did some voice work and all for the film, but he was not actually there to shoot scenes:
“I wasn’t there,” he said. “It’s a really awkward situation—I’m in the trailer for a movie that I didn’t work on.”
The best part? Shannon says the entire story was made up bullsh*t from the word go. He’s apparently some Kryptonian ghost , if anything, and his role in the film is not flipper related and the flippers aren’t really flippers at all. And many other comments, I’m sure, because the entire thing isn’t confusing enough:
“Somebody was asking me about this in New York and I made up some ridiculous bullsh*t answer about how my character Zod has flippers, and this went viral on the Internet or something and people have been asking me about that,” Shannon said with a baffled smile. “That is so obviously a complete bullsh*t story, right? But people took it seriously.”
So Shannon told the flipper hands story, someone took it to be real and ran with it. Now Shannon did work on the film, but only with voice work, and anything he appears in for the film — like say a corpse in a body bag — isn’t him and he has no clue that he’s even in the trailer for the film. Hopefully that makes sense and it’s all well and good.
Now if Michael Shannon shows up in the film and is wearing flippers, I hope we realize what happened here and remember that Michael Shannon is a terrible liar. He should’ve just stuck with the first tale.
