Sure, you’ve seen Star Wars trailers. But have you seen Star Wars trailers where you can click on it and look around? You have now, thanks to ILM and Facebook.
Fair warning: The controls take some getting used to; when you click, you’ll lock onto the video, and wherever you drag your finger or mouse, the video will move in the opposite direction. It takes a little getting used to, but once you get the hang of it, you’ll probably spend an hour looking for hints about Star Wars: The Force Awakens like I did. You won’t find any, but hey, it’s fun.
Although, I thought Tusken Raiders were native to Tatooine. What, did they emigrate to Jakku? Did naturalists move them there to see if they’d thrive in a similar habitat? I’d like to see the Empire’s paperwork on that one.
On a technical level, it’s also Facebook announcing their plans with VR and augmented reality. Facebook has invested a lot of money in tech like this: It bought the hot startup Oculus, among other moves. But we haven’t really seen what it’s planning until now. This may be the first 360 video on Facebook… but don’t expect it to be the last.
