Hey, have you heard there’s a trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens coming during Monday Night Football? Apparently, we’ll have to sit through an eagle fighting a giant to watch it, but it’ll be worth it. How do we know? Because Disney has been dumping every conceivable teaser and hint in the last two days.
Sure, there’s the poster, which we’ll get to in a minute, but first, let’s look at those teasers. Some of them are just a black screen with lightsabers swinging around, others are just old footage with a clearer sound mix, and still others have new footage, but don’t reveal all that much. But some of them give context to footage we’ve seen, like Rey’s visit to what might well be Endor, or just how friendly Poe and Finn are:

It looks like the rebellion is gearing up for another big, ugly fight. Wasn’t Finn supposed to be a pacifist? Finally, we’re curious how he’s got a blaster in this scene and no visible lightsaber, because he sure has one later. We’ll have to wait for the trailer tonight for any more context, but keep a sharp eye out for hints about Rey’s parentage and what planets this movie might be visiting. I’m still rooting for Kylo Ren to find out if there’s more than one way to skin an Ewok.
Now, about that poster, there’s one tidbit in particular the internet is freaking out over, beyond trying to figure out who the hell that is next to R2, and it’s this:
That would appear to be our first look at the Starkiller, the Death Star upgrade that the movie’s plot centers around. But to me, what’s more interesting is Rey’s staff and how the poster is laid out. It’s been noted for a while that Rey’s staff has a suspicious resemblance to a lightsaber on a stick, but notice that her staff has been placed alongside the blade of a lightsaber, and it looks to me the image is cropped to strongly suggest Luke’s saber at one end, and Darth Vader’s on the other. Also curious is her placement; notice that Kylo and Rey mirror Han and Leia, and that Rey is placed with the villains.
Of course, I could be reading too much into this. But, hey, that’s my job. We’ll find out a little more tonight when the game kicks off at 8:30 p.m. EST, and see the whole enchilada Dec. 18.
