There’s a lot to unpack from Captain America: Civil War‘s new trailer, mostly of the “How will Tony and Cap work together after this mess?” variety. But there’s also the fact that for a trailer, they didn’t give away too much about who we’ll be seeing. Here’s who’s in the trailer… and who we know will be showing up, but didn’t make the cut.
Team Cap
This confirms a few rumors: We see Cap’s got the Winter Soldier, the Falcon, Hawkeye, and the Scarlet Witch on his side. Which is something of a hand-to-hand heavy team when fighting two walking fighter jets, but we do see Cap wrestle a helicopter in this trailer.
Team Tony
Interestingly, while we do see Black Widow arguing with Steve and fighting a few agents using her usual flying groin takedown style, her allegiance seems only reluctantly with Tony at best, and we don’t see her fighting alongside him. Jim Rhodes, though, appears to be all in, and as you can see above, it doesn’t end well for him.
That said, there does seem to be one pro-registration hero who has it together…
Black Panther
Panther only has a few shots in this trailer, but we see him outrunning Cap and dropkicking Bucky. So, at least Tony’s got backup.
Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross
Here’s a blast from the past that surely will not turn out to be crucial to the plot: General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, the Hulk’s main Army foe, turns up here to deliver the Sokovia Accords, what kicks off this whole superhero fight. He hasn’t turned up in the MCU since The Incredible Hulk, so appearing here is interesting.
Who We Didn’t See
This trailer left out a lot of the confirmed cast, surprisingly. There’s no sign of The Vision or Ant-Man. Spider-Man, rumored to make a cameo, doesn’t show up here, either. Cap’s love interest in Winter Solder, Sharon Carter, is in the movie, but can only be glimpsed briefly. Similarly missing are the actual villains of the piece, Baron Zemo and Crossbones. Finally, remaining unrevealed? Martin Freeman‘s role in all this. But we’ll have plenty of time to learn how they play into the story; Captain America: Civil War arrives May 6.
