Star Trek Beyond debuted its first trailer today, and it very much wants you to think this is The Fast and The Logical, at the expense of having any idea what the plot might be. But despite the best efforts of the Paramount marketing department, this trailer does have a few hints as to what actually happens in the movie! And it could be really cool!
It looks like most of the action does not take place on the ship, because the Enterprise gets well and truly destroyed this go-round:
We see lots of shots of escape pods, our heroes wandering through desolate landscapes, and pretty much the entire crew of the ship taken hostage by whoever is manning these kamikaze death drones. You’d think a spaceship hull could take more of a beating, but maybe the Federation cheaped out on the armor.
That said, this entry’s aliens appear to have at least a couple of reasons to be upset at the Federation. Considering that, no kidding, Kirk ramps a motorcycle into an enemy compound in this trailer:
…and that a rusty old ship that nonetheless seems to be Federation property keeps turning up, it seems like humans have been on this planet before. This is only reinforced by the fact that this race of aliens, whoever they are, appear to be plenty ticked at the Federation, to the point of attacking one of their bases.
It’s not much to go on, but at least it’s the outline of a plot. We’re sure as July 22 gets closer, we’ll learn more about the aliens, the mysterious ninja woman Kirk teams up with, and just what it all has to do with the Federation. Until then, we can continue to debate why the Beastie Boys never released “Intergalactic” in this timeline. Seriously, they have “Sabotage,” but not the song referencing Spock?
