Despite its title, Ant-Man really belonged to Evangeline Lilly’s Hope van Dyne/Wasp almost as much as it did to Paul Rudd’s Scott Lang/Ant-Man. The two characters will share top billing in 2018’s Ant-Man and the Wasp, but would Marvel ever consider doing a solo Wasp movie?
Ant-Man co-writer Adam McKay thinks it could happen:
“Possibly. I think it all depends on this sequel and how the character plays. Certainly there’s a lot of female superheroes in the Marvel universe so I’m sure you’re going to see them start to spread out. That’d be interesting, a Wasp movie. I don’t know, that’d be very interesting. I always think of the two of them as kind of together – they always were in the comics – but why not?”
McKay also gave a refreshingly level-headed, logical explanation for why early Marvel movies didn’t feature many female heroes, and why we’re going to be seeing more in the future.
“[Marvel Studios] sort of started with their kind of bedrock characters from the ’60s and the ’70s and I think you saw more of an explosion of female characters happening in the ’80s and then the ’90s. X-Men obviously has great female characters.”
According to McKay, writing on Ant-Man and the Wasp hasn’t even begun yet, but word is he will be involved in some capacity. What do you folks think? Want a solo Wasp movie? Personally, I think she’s always been a better team player, so having her join The Avengers might be the best use for her. But I certainly wouldn’t complain about a two-hour Evangeline Lilly/Wasp showcase.
