Agents of SHIELD spent most of its first season in a holding pattern before finally being allowed to drop its big twist, part of the fallout from Captain America: The Winter Soldier. That set the show on a new track towards espionage, Inhumans, and Mack running around with an axe. But will a similar ripple effect in Captain America: Civil War help or hurt the show?
A plot synopsis for an upcoming episode hints that there will be an effect, even though it’s not a direct tie-in. But it makes it sound like there’s a winner at the end of the movie. If you don’t want to be spoiled, just gaze upon the smoothness that is Ward’s GQ spread as you click away:

It’s unclear whether they’ll be bumping off Cap, like they did in the original comics. It seems way more likely he’s going to lose to Tony and get thrown in jail, if for no other reason than Avengers: Infinity War is coming up. Or maybe Cap realizes that despite the fact that it’s supported by Tony, a guy who has so far managed to cause several disasters by acting unilaterally with no checks and balances, that just maybe beings of unalloyed godlike power should be accountable to the human beings they could easily stomp like ants.
In a way, this is unfair to Agents of SHIELD, because the screenwriting team on Civil War didn’t even know the show had Inhumans in the first place. Part of the reason Agents of SHIELD has improved so quickly is that it’s largely ditched the Marvel Cinematic Universe except for nods here and there. Thankfully, whether or not Inhumans should be public is an ongoing theme the show treats with surprising balance; even the Inhumans themselves aren’t sure whether they should be out and proud superheroes or stay under the radar. But, of course, we’ll need to see both the movie and episode to judge: Civil War arrives on May 6, and Agents of SHIELD airs their response May 10.
