Later this month, we’ll be seeing Ben Affleck take up the cowl as Batman in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, but we still vividly remember Christian Bale in the role for Chris Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy. Bale even sounds like he was willing to do another movie, even if the last one had a clear ending he was still asked to explain in what had to be tedious interviews.

Bale spoke to Yahoo! Movies this week, expressing regret over not quite nailing the Batman performance he was going for. “I didn’t quite manage what I hoped I would throughout the trilogy. Chris [Nolan] did, but my own sense of self is like, ‘I didn’t quite nail it.'” He gives a hint at what he was trying to nail down when he says, “I found, when I put on the suit, I just went, I’d just feel like a bloody idiot if I don’t use this a means of, kind of, it’s his true, monstrous self that he allows to come out in that moment.”

So, what made an Oscar winner like Bale question his own acting ability? Heath Ledger, naturally. His Joker in 2008’s The Dark Knight was an undeniable juggernaut.

“Heath turned up, and just kind of completely ruined all my plans, because I went, ‘He’s so much more interesting than me and what I’m doing.'”

Woah, that sounds really… oh what’s the word? Pensive? Contemplative? Pokerfaced? Yeah, something like that. Why so contemplative, Christian Bale?
