Daredevil hasn’t been shy about acknowledging that its hero and the Punisher don’t exactly get along. But this poster is a summary, if you needed one, of just how little they agree on anything.
If you’re wondering why the Punisher, who tends to kill people, hasn’t put a bullet in Daredevil, the short answer is that he essentially only kills people he thinks are even. As the recent trailer makes clear, the Punisher doesn’t think Daredevil is evil, he thinks Daredevil is a wuss for not putting an end to the people he beats up once and for all. But since he can’t shoot Daredevil, he’s got to get him out of the way somehow. Hence the chains, although the trailer shows Frank Castle might regret handing a ninja a heavy length of chain to beat him with.
Daredevil and the Punisher play off each other so well because of their conflicting perceptions of justice and vengeance. Matt Murdock is a good Catholic who believes in the law and that even the guilty deserve a fair shot, while the Punisher will kill without remorse if you go far enough. We’ll see just how that plays out when Netflix premieres season two of Daredevil March 18.
