Benedict Cumberbatch dropped by Jimmy Kimmel Live to share the first trailer for Doctor Strange, Marvel’s second big release for 2016. The entire thing started out with Cumberbatch defending the role a bit and explaining how he’s not a magician. There’s talk of Agamotto, mystical arts, and there’s even a balloon animal or two.
The trailer itself starts off with Strange at his lowest following a dreadful car accident and then traveling the world in search of his life after being a medical doctor. We also get a look at the very bald Tilda Swinton, Mads Mikkelsen looking evil as can be, and Chiwetel Ejiofor rounding a cast of people with names that will be the bane of my existence.
The trailer is trippy as hell, though. Cities moving all around like something out of Inception and plenty of astral projection. Missing is the iconic costume, but I’m sure we’ll get another look down the road. This is just the teaser, after all. The only problem here is how seriously it seems to be taking itself. Will audiences go see a Doctor Strange film just because it is Marvel? Guardians of the Galaxy at least had the benefit of Chris Pratt and a very fun vibe. This merely has Sherlock and Hannibal Lecter.
You know I really don’t know what I’m talking about. Enjoy!
