If you’ve watched Guardians of the Galaxy, you’re pretty much guaranteed to have a soft spot for Baby Groot. It’s clear Marvel and James Gunn have some love for Baby Groot too, because he’ll have a starring role in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. It’s a smart decision by Marvel, but it does raise some questions – like, what can we expect from lil’ Groot personality-wise? All we know so far is that he likes to dance. Will he act like a baby in the movie? Does he still have his adult memories and experiences?
Collider recently asked Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige for the lowdown, and he explained Baby Groot by referencing another fan-favorite sci-fi series.
“He remembers. He’s not mentally a baby, he is still Groot. I sort of equate it to Spock circa the end of Search for Spock and The Voyage Home.”
Makes sense. But how will Groot’s rebirth effect his partnership with Rocket?
“It’s not just about the funny, it’s not just about the action, it’s about the heart. And the amount of heart that you get out of this trash panda raccoon and now this little twig Baby Groot is actually awe-inspiring. It is amazing what [James Gunn] has done with those two characters.”
Sadly, Collider did not ask if Vin Diesel will now be saying “Groot” in a squeaky baby voice. If he is, that truly will be awe-inspiring.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hits theaters May 5, 2017.
