WARNING: Don’t be a fool and read this without having seen The Force Awakens or any of the Star Wars films that preceded it. Your presence is quite perplexing.
During his very revealing chat with Chris Rock at Tribeca, J.J. Abrams hit on plenty of topics across his career. This includes the lens flare obsession and his recent forays into Star Trek and Star Wars. The latter carried a few nuggets about Mark Hamil’s reluctance to take the role and a lot of the dream fulfilling, but there was also an interesting tidbit about Rey.
As it turns out, Rey’s lineage did come up during the discussion and Abrams gave a very comical answer that was followed by one that elaborated on the idea a bit:
“Rey’s parents are not in Episode VII, so I couldn’t possibly tell you in this moment who they are.”
So this could mean a few things. One, J.J. Abrams is full of it and knows exactly who the pappy is here because Luke appeared in the movie. Two, J.J. Abrams is full of it and nobody knows who Rey’s parents are because it hasn’t been written yet. And three, he’s not lying and Rey’s parents are someone not related to the Skywalkers. That means we might be getting something fresh from the series to put in all of those troll pipes to smoke.
My theory on this entire thing is a reverse New Hope. Since the son of Han Solo and Leia is a dark Jedi — making Luke Skywalker the uncle — Rey can be the outsider that needs to be trained to defeat the evil in the family. So instead of an outsider training the son to take down the father, it’s the uncle training the outsider to take down the nephew who worships the father and still loves the sister. That or she’s Snope’s Snoke’s kid and Luke stole her from him. Or maybe she was formed by midi-chlorians in the womb!
UPDATE: Thanks to the comments, the update can be added here courtesy of EW:
After the Q&A, EW caught up with J.J. Abrams and he clarified his comments. The director says he was only trying to point out that The Force Awakens builds up the mystery of Rey’s parents without resolving it. “What I meant was that she doesn’t discover them in Episode VII. Not that they may not already be in her world,” Abrams said.
My original points stand. J.J. Abrams is full of it AND we should change his name to Snope.
Either way, let’s get this scene remade in Episode VIII:
