The English actor that helped make R2-D2 a sci-fi icon for the ages has passed away at age 83.
Kenny Baker, a man with a filmography that also boasts such works as Flash Gordon, Time Bandits and The Elephant Man, left an indelible impression in the world of film that is understandably headlined by his work playing the legendary Star Wars droid R2-D2. Standing 3 feet and 8 inches tall, Baker’s impact on the world of the franchise managed to be enormous. He would play the beloved character in the first six Star Wars films, as well as serve as a consultant for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The health of the actor would face challenges in later years and Baker was ill for an extended period of time before his passing.
“It was expected, but it’s sad nonetheless,” niece Abigail Shield told The Guardian. “He had a very long and fulfilled life. He brought lots of happiness to people and we’ll be celebrating the fact that he was well loved throughout the world. We’re all very proud of what he achieved in his lifetime.”
Baker may have passed on, but it’s reasonable to imagine his excellent work will live on for centuries.
